About Course

CNC Turning Programming & Setting

This course equips learners with the practical skills needed

to program, set, and operate CNC turning centers in a modern manufacturing environment. Combining theory with extensive hands-on practice, it covers the full workflow from reading engineering drawings to producing finished, quality-checked components.

Format: Combines classroom instruction with hands-on machine time, working toward the ability to independently set up and run a CNC turning job from a drawing to a finished part.

Outcome: By the end of the course, learners will be able to confidently write, edit, and prove out turning programs, set tools and offsets, and produce accurate components that meet drawing specifications.

What Will You Learn?

  • • CNC lathe fundamentals — machine axes, coordinate systems, and control panel operation
  • • Manual part programming using G-codes and M-codes (turning, facing, grooving, threading, parting)
  • • Conversational/canned cycle programming for common turning operations
  • • Work offsets, tool offsets, and tool nose radius compensation
  • • Setting up and proving out programs safely at the machine
  • • Selecting appropriate cutting tools, speeds, and feeds for different materials
  • • Workholding methods — chucks, collets, centers, and steadies
  • • Reading engineering drawings and interpreting GD&T basics
  • • Troubleshooting common programming and setting errors
  • • Quality inspection using calipers, micrometers, and gauges
